St. Patty's Day Shirts

Jacob and I made a story board for his class for group time to show his classmates how we dyed shirts for St. Patrick's Day. This is what it said!

Jacob’s mom had the idea for a project. She said we could dye some shirts green for St. Patrick’s Day. First we went to the store to buy the t-shirts. The store was called Target. You always know it’s a Target because the sign for the store has a dot inside of a circle.

We found two white shirts. One for Jacob and one for Casey. We bought them. They cost $15.00. We looked for t-shirt dye at Target. They had some, but it was black and blue. And we wanted green. Green is Jacob’s favorite color, and also we were making green shirts for St. Patrick’s Day.

So we went to a craft store called Michaels. They had lots of paint for shirts. They also had green dye. We bought some. It cost $2.29.

When we got home Jacob’s mom looked up some directions for how to dye a shirt on the computer. We dissolved the green powder in about 2 cups of hot water. Then we filled a metal bowl with very hot water. We added the powder that we had dissolved. It was really dark. It almost looked blue! We did this project in the basement, in case we spilled some of the dye, so it wouldn’t stain our floor in our apartment.

Then we got the shirts wet with plain hot water. Then Jacob’s mom put Casey’s shirt in the dye for a short time, and she rinsed the shirt under warm and then cold water. Then we put Jacob’s shirt in the bowl with the dye. And Jacob stirred the water for a long time. It was at least 10 minutes. Jacob stirred the shirt up and down, and back and forth. Casey’s shirt is a lighter green because we didn’t leave it in the dye for as long.

Then Jacob’s mom took the shirt out of the dye and rinsed it. They we put the shirts in the washing machine and ran the machine. After that we put the shirts in the dryer. We also took pictures of the different steps along the way. Which shirts do you like better? The white shirts, or the green shirts?
