Jacob neologism

While we're writing about stuff Jacob says, I wanted to record that he has made up a name for the Cathedral of Learning in Oakland--he calls it the "Cremendrels." I always reply and say "Yep, that's the Cremendrels," not wanting to squelch his verbal creativity. Hopefully he doesn't get to frustrated trying to explain to his teachers what the Cremendrels is... :)

More on Jacob and God and Dinosaurs and Santa Claus

At the natural history museum today Jacob asked me when Santa Claus was going to die. I said Santa Claus was like a super hero, and that he never really dies. Jacob said, "like God." And I said, "Yes, if you believe in God." And Jacob said, "You don't believe in God?" And I said, "No, but it's OK if you do." And Jacob said, "Does God live forever? He never dies, right?" And I said, "That's what a lot of people believe." And Jacob said, "Did these dinosaurs die?" And I said, "Yes." And Jacob said, "And their skin melted off, leaving the bones behind?" And I said, "Yes." And then we had a snack.

Metaphysician

Today Jacob kind of said out of nowhere "God is invisible." I said "who told you that?" He said "Nobody, uh, I told me that." I was like "Oh, you figured it out, huh?" And he didn't answer because he had moved on to doing something else...

Spring has sprung!

We've been hanging out a lot at our neighborhood park, Frick Park, now that the thermometer has climbed above 35! Whoo hoo! Check out Jacob at the top of the climber! Casey also has her eyes on the sky!

St Patty's Day Cuties

Here they are in their shirts! (See below for how we made them!).

St. Patty's Day Shirts

Jacob and I made a story board for his class for group time to show his classmates how we dyed shirts for St. Patrick's Day. This is what it said!

Jacob’s mom had the idea for a project. She said we could dye some shirts green for St. Patrick’s Day. First we went to the store to buy the t-shirts. The store was called Target. You always know it’s a Target because the sign for the store has a dot inside of a circle.

We found two white shirts. One for Jacob and one for Casey. We bought them. They cost $15.00. We looked for t-shirt dye at Target. They had some, but it was black and blue. And we wanted green. Green is Jacob’s favorite color, and also we were making green shirts for St. Patrick’s Day.

So we went to a craft store called Michaels. They had lots of paint for shirts. They also had green dye. We bought some. It cost $2.29.

When we got home Jacob’s mom looked up some directions for how to dye a shirt on the computer. We dissolved the green powder in about 2 cups of hot water. Then we filled a metal bowl with very hot water. We added the powder that we had dissolved. It was really dark. It almost looked blue! We did this project in the basement, in case we spilled some of the dye, so it wouldn’t stain our floor in our apartment.

Then we got the shirts wet with plain hot water. Then Jacob’s mom put Casey’s shirt in the dye for a short time, and she rinsed the shirt under warm and then cold water. Then we put Jacob’s shirt in the bowl with the dye. And Jacob stirred the water for a long time. It was at least 10 minutes. Jacob stirred the shirt up and down, and back and forth. Casey’s shirt is a lighter green because we didn’t leave it in the dye for as long.

Then Jacob’s mom took the shirt out of the dye and rinsed it. They we put the shirts in the washing machine and ran the machine. After that we put the shirts in the dryer. We also took pictures of the different steps along the way. Which shirts do you like better? The white shirts, or the green shirts?

More questions from Jacob

In addition to those listed below, Jacob has also said the following things in the past few days:

TO KATHY: When are you and your dad [Josh, he meant] going to break up? [This is from him learning about an aunt and uncle breaking up, but Kathy didn't know it at the time]

TO JOSH LAST NIGHT, AFTER JOSH BRUSHED, FLOSSED, & MOUTHWASHED: Jacob was giving me a nighty-night kiss and then he pulled back and said "Your mouth smells so good it makes me want to lick it on the inside!" It looks like Jake is going to blossom into a real Casanova :)

Existential Inquisitor

Jacob has been coming up with some doozies lately. Who had the first baby (as in, in the history of humankind)? Why do we have fingernails? Is the moon God? It's been challenging to answer these questions, but fun, too. I also want to report that when Jacob noticed that my picture doesn't come up on the family's digital picture frame very often, he said that he would get a camera and take lots of pictures of me so that there would be as many as me as there are of the rest of the family. Very sweet. Posted by Kathy

Casey's language development

Casey is almost 23 months old, & say a ton of stuff. Yesterday, when she finished her milk I asked the usual "All done?" And she replied "It's empty." Today she was drawing and said "I drawin a missile." I don't know where she learned the word missile from--probably Jacob's fascination with Ironman.

Jacob's language development also registered an interesting blip this week--our "toy of the week" was a brain child of mine: all the covers and pillows in the house in a huge pile on Jacob's floor. Casey and Jacob have been jumping off his bed into the sea of blankets and pillows, and doing somersaults off the bed into it as well. Jacob told me the day we set it up that he was going to call this collection of pillows & blankets (he didn't use those words) the "cozy swamp," which is an apt name, as you can hopefully see from the picture below.
